Kauai Recap #1

I really didn’t think any place could be better than Maui, but then we went to Kauai. The Kauai landscape was like nothing I’ve ever seen before and so incredibly lush and beautiful. And the food? Freaking amazing.

We rented a VRBO on the north side of the island in Princeville for four nights and couldn’t be happier with our decision. Through some research we found out that there is quite the difference in climate from the south and north side of the island with the south being more dry and north being the wettest. We wanted to take a chance and stay on the north shore simply because we heard the landscape was better there and it was closer to some of the hikes we wanted to do.

We arrived at our VRBO and were instantly greeted by chickens…everywhere.Back in 1992 Hurricane ‘Iniki freed many of them from local farms and they now roam the island. Just hilarious!

Our first full day in Kauai started off with a short walk to Queen’s Bath which is a natural attraction for both locals and tourists alike.

Located on the North Shore, Queens Bath is a unique tide pool surrounded by black igneous rock and filled with small sea creatures. For the adrenaline junkies, you can even jump from the rock cliff into the Queens Bath when the water is calm.

By the time we got back from our hike, it was just about lunchtime so we made the 10 minute drive to SushiGirl, highly recommended by a few locals. It was the tiniest, cutest little stand near the end of the road on the north shore and was seriously the freshest sushi I have ever had in my life. YUM.

We took our sushi to Hanalei Bay–a perfect semi-circular sandy beach with some amazing views– and spent our afternoon relaxing.

This was one of our favorite beaches and was a quick five-minute drive from our VRBO. We even attempted an open water swim here which failed miserably…but hey, we tried!

Wiped from the day, we decided on an early dinner at Tahiti Nui (featured in the movie, Descendants) and some live music before calling it a night. Very successful first day in Kauai!
